Sant Gregori

Saint Gregori festival is celebrated on 9 May. Saint Gregori is one of the town’s patron saints, and according to tradition this celebration is in honour of the saint which freed the inhabitant of Benicarló from deathly plagues.
The festival begins the night before at the hermitage where some town associations provide a bar and the chance to have a torrada – barbecue.
The main celebrations start very early the next day, when the ‘Saint’s pilgrimage’ takes place from San Bartolomé church to the hermitage, 2km away. The locals and visitors accompany the saint on foot or by horse and cart, and hand out traditional cornets and candy. There is a small fair at the hermitage and also paellas are cooked. Celebrations go on all afternoon until sunset and then everyone walks back to town.
