Sant Joan at the beach

The privileged location of Benicarló on the Mediterranean coast means that there are many Mediterranean traditions and customs relating to the sea and the beach. One of these is the eve of Sant Juan which celebrates the summer solstice on 23 June. The tradition on this night is to have fun with family and friends on the beach singing, dancing or just having an ice-cream on one of the terraces, or a traditional flatbread with pork scratchings, or perhaps going on a boat trip to take in the last few hours of sun.
The most awaited moment of the night is also a bit magical, and starts with a bonfire and fireworks on the beach, where lots of people make a wish and jump over the bonfire or wet their feet in the sea.
