Easter week

Easter week in Benicarló, has been declared a Local Festival of Tourist Interest which is lived intensely. There is a full programme of events, which is divided into two: the religious programme and the recreational, family programme.
The Holy Christ of the Sea is one of the most solemn and passionate processions. The figure of Christ is moved from San Pedro church to San Bartolomé church where everyone wishing to do so, can accompany the float along with their candle 9 days before Palm Sunday. After novena prayers the figure is taken back in procession to San Pedro church.
Easter week continues with traditional events like blessing the palms, the Via Crucis, the processions on Maundy Thursday called “Encounter” between the Nazarene and Dolorosa, and Good Friday called the “Holy Funeral”. There are a total of 7 brotherhoods representing different scenes from the Passion of Christ.
The silence of these processions is broken by the sound of drums and the music band. On Holy Saturday the “Trencà de la hora” – breaking the hour – takes place, this is when all the different groups of drummers from the town and the surrounding regions of Castellón and Tarragona get together. Easter week finishes on Sunday with the resurrection procession.
